Epstein: I want to play in a fantasy league

Satire

Verbal Jazz News Service has learned, through a well-connected source in the Boston Red Sox organization, that Theo Epstein stepped down from his General Manager post out of a desire to play fantasy baseball.

According to the source, Epstein's decision had nothing to do with an ongoing personality conflict with Red Sox President and CEO Larry Lucchino. "Theo has worked in baseball all his life, he wanted to be able to play on a fantasy level," said the source. "I mean you don't just decline $4.5 million just because you think your boss sucks."

Fantasy sports experts agree that Theo will bring significant baseball knowledge to his fantasy league, but predict a quick downfall for the onetime GM. "Theo Epstein will quickly realize that his player assessment skills are all well and good for baseball, but have no practical application in the real world of fantasy baseball," said Dustin Wilson, noted fantasy sports expert. "He's in for a rude awakening."

Epstein is already hard at work on his first ever fantasy baseball draft and is working on a deal to acquire Alex Rodriguez, a player he could not bring to the Red Sox.

The Red Sox front office declined to comment on this story.
